Security Blanket by Nadia Kingsley The cause of her death was unknown
and so a post mortem was ordered.
The pathologist began with the thorax.
Her heart was strong and well developed.
The lungs carried scars of past battles
but were well healed and otherwise normal.
The aorta was of average diameter –
no thrombus or aneurysm discovered.
On opening up the abdomen however,
the pathologist was surprised by its contents.
He dissected out the rather unusual gut
and transferred it to a separate table.
He poked it.
Measured it.
Photographed it.
He described it to his Dictaphone.
“All sections of the intestine are of normal length and diameter.
When opened up, although loaded with faecal matter,
the contents are found to be normal.
The unusual part of the whole damned thing,
previously undescribed,
and wholly incompatible with life,
is that the small and large intestines
are as soft and cuddly as a teddy bear,
warm as a scarf,
as stretchy as a jumper,
fashioned from two balls of three ply into
a long knitted tube of involuntary muscle and villi.
The question is ….,”
The pathologist paused to ponder,
